Not crazy about the swiveling head... but, this WAS a cycle so, I needed to have it repeatable. Leaving it straight ahead was a little boring - and having him turn side to side is too much. Somewhere, there's a happy medium.

I built the staircase in Google Sketchup, then imported a flat image into Photoshop, to check it against my "eyeballed" version of spiraling stairs. I wasn't far off. And, I decided to keep my eyeballed version against the truer rendering because the distortion allowed me to get both windows and the character in the frame. Know the rules... so you know how/when to break them, I guess.

I think there is still some work needed on this. David Nethery pointed out something that I need to remember to consider in ALL animation work - gravity. Specifically, it's effect on the "WEIGHT" of the character/object in motion. Jonas seems to be unaffected by gravity, as if he were just going through the motions of walking without really carrying any 'load' so to speak.

A Take is that moment of surprise, or extreme reaction, by a character to something in their environment. Best known for his takes is Tex Avery (wolf character). I included two takes in this sequence. I tired using a stagger on the ghost's laugh, but it didn't turn out too well. I think I needed to have him move forward less, and up/down more.

Animation - 3 Keys (5+)

A Key Frame is a unique pose in a series of movements. Hands on hips. Hands on face. Arms pointing away. Then, you locate the Extremes, lesser poses, between the keys to help shape the action and figure out timing. Then, you do the Breakdown drawings. These are poses that are halfway between Extremes. And, lastly, you do the inbetweening. Drawing the various poses in-between the Extremes and Breakdowns. The number of poses and the space between poses is what determines the "speed" of the action.

This animation was an attempt to show/convey a figure straining under weight. Staggering in animation means resequencing an instance so that the drawings 1-10 actually play in the order: 1,3,2,4,3,5,4,6,5,7,6,8,7,9,8,10

This animation is of Jonas. Good old Jonas. His bangs are a LITTLE overdone. Too whippy. But, the point was to use overlapping animation. Things move at different times, speeds. Eyes first, then head turns, then hair - eyes stop, head stops, hair stops.

This is a simpler style of animation, purely 2D. Much quicker and faster animations. Easier too!

This week we were attempting to play with the weight of an object in motion. The first example is of a cannonball. This second one is of a balloon floating through a neighborhood.

My first attempts at trying to get a ball to bounce naturally, and using the new animation software TVP Animation.

The shape of the ball started to get away from me on this one, so I changed it to crumble/fall apart on purpose.

I messed with the timing on this one. Bad. But, I also started playing around with color in the application.

TVP Animation has some really great texture brushes.

This first board was supposed to be about an instance or experience in my life in the past week. The story is waking up and realizing that I am late for a Sounders' game. I rush to the freeway and see that it is jam-packed.

This second series is for an Apple Computer commercial from 1984. We basically needed to transcribe the commercial as we watched it.

These four Presentation Boards are the Key Frames of a proposed "Trunk Monkey" commercial.

The last two blue storyboard pages are from an assignment: In 12 - 24 frames, tell the story of two people walking down a road and then something falls from the sky.
